Baseball, often referred to as “America’s pastime,” stands as one of the world’s most beloved sports. With over 2,400 Major League Baseball (MLB) games and tens of thousands of college ballgames each year, there’s a constant stream of content for TV viewers. Broadcasting a baseball game live involves a complex process, but we’ll focus on one crucial aspect: the camera positions commonly used in baseball broadcasts and the specific roles each camera operator plays.

Keep in mind that each broadcast can differ based on the network, league, conference, budget, and available resources, as well as the director’s and producer’s preferences in any given situation. However, the following outlines the most common and essential camera positions typically used in a baseball broadcast.

Camera 1 – Low Third

In most sports, camera 1 is the “game camera,” capturing the action from a wide angle, showing nearly all players on the playing surface in one shot. Due to the dynamic nature of baseball, there isn’t a single “game cam.” Instead, Camera 1, known as the “low third” camera, is positioned low on the field along the third base side, adjacent to the dugout.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-pitch: The camera’s focus shifts based on whether the pitcher and batter are left or right-handed. These shots will be used to display graphics of the pitcher/batter and their preparation between each pitch.
  • If both are right-handed, camera 1 focuses on the pitcher, since they will be facing towards the camera, and the batter will be facing the opposite side of the field.
  • If both are left-handed, the operator focuses on the batter.
  • If both face towards camera 1, the batter will typically get priority, but this will vary depending on in-game circumstances and director preference.
  • If both face away from camera 1, the operator prepares to “shag” the play, which is an industry term for following the ball and capturing action on an as-needed basis.
  • During the Pitch: Camera 1 frames either the pitcher or batter head-to-toe, depending on the pre-pitch scenario, providing essential replay options that highlight the pitcher’s delivery or the batter’s swing.
  • When a ball is put into play: If focused on the batter during the swing, the operator follows the player as they round the bases.
  • Hero/Storytelling Shots: When not busy with a specific assignment, the operator captures various shots of key players and coaches that follow the storyline of the game and what the announcers are discussing, both on the field and in each dugout (some stadium designs allow better views than others of each dugout from each side of the field).

Camera 5 – Low First

Camera 5 mirrors Camera 1, located instead on the first base side. Its responsibilities are nearly identical, but opposite due to its position.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-Pitch, during the pitch, and when the ball is in play: Just like with camera 1, the camera’s focus shifts based on whether the pitcher and batter are left or right-handed, but opposite. All other assignments remain the same (refer to the camera 1 section above).
  • Hero/Storytelling Shots: When not busy with a specific assignment, camera 5 will also be responsible for various “hero” and storytelling shots.
  • Scoring Runners: The one unique responsibility that camera 5 does not share with camera 1 is scoring the runners. Cam 5 will always be responsible for shooting players as they cross home plate and capturing ensuing celebrations, as they will always be facing towards this camera at this time.

Camera 2 – High Home

Positioned high above and centered behind home plate, Camera 2 is relatively akin to a “game camera,” capturing action from a wide angle, showing the ball and key players involved in the play at any given time. Primarily used for live coverage, this angle provides crucial play-by-play shots, which can also be used for replays.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-Pitch: Stays in a wide “ready-to-go” position. A good operator with an in-depth understanding of the game may “cheat” their framing one direction or the other, based on any given batter’s likelihood to hit in a certain direction, which can give them a better chance to get a shot more quickly when the ball is put into play.
  • When a ball is put into play: Follows the ball’s path, from the bat to wherever it goes in the field, ensuring key players are in frame as they go to make a play. The operator will continue to follow the ball until the play is over.

Camera 3 – High First

Located above Camera 5, Camera 3 is versatile, often run by one of the best operators on the crew.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-pitch: Functions as one of the primary storytelling cameras, capturing shots that follow the announcer’s calls in real-time, as well as specific director instructions.
  • When a ball is put into play: Covers plays just like camera 2, but at a tighter angle for replay use.
  • Creative Freedom: Moreso than most other cameras in baseball, this operator typically has freedom to offer interesting and relevant shots, enhancing the broadcast narrative.

Camera 8 – High Third

Nearly identical to camera 3, but on the third base side, located above camera 1.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-pitch: Also functions as one of the primary storytelling cameras, capturing shots that follow the announcer’s calls in real-time, as well as specific director instructions.
  • When a ball is put into play: Also responsible for “shagging” each play at a tight angle for use in replays.
  • Creative Freedom: Typically has the same freedom as cam 3 to offer interesting and relevant shots, enhancing the broadcast narrative.
  • Pick-Offs: Frames potential pick-off plays at first base, framing the pitcher, batter, and first baseman, ready to push towards the base as soon as a pick-off attempt is made.

Camera 4 – Center Field

Also known as the “batter’s eye,” Camera 4 is positioned just off-center in the outfield, to the right of the pitcher (from the operator’s perspective).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-pitch and during the pitch: Frames the pitcher, batter, catcher, and umpire, and is used live for every pitch.
  • When a ball is put into play: Zooms in on the pitcher for reaction shots, which can be used live or for replays, or follows the runner down the first base line after a walk.

Camera 6 – Tight Center

Located near Camera 4, Camera 6 offers tighter angles of the batter before, during, and after each pitch.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pre-pitch: Shoots close-up shots of the batter as an alternate angle to cams 1 and 5.
  • During the Pitch: Does a “tight ball follow,” tightly tracking the ball from the pitcher’s hand to the plate, for use in replays.
  • When a ball is put into play: Follows the runner as they round the bases, giving the director the option to show live reactions, and can also be used in replays.

Other Cameras

While smaller shows can use even less cameras (typically at least 4), high-level baseball broadcasts often include even more cameras:

  • Foul Pole Cams: Positioned beside the foul poles for unique angles.
  • Gimbal/Steadi-Cam: Used for on-field shots of walkups and celebrations.
  • Robo Cams: Placed in less accessible areas, often directly behind home plate.
  • Beauty/Marshall Cams: Used for still shots of the full stadium, or specific elements of the park.
  • Booth Cams: Typically unmanned camera dedicated to “on-camera” announcer shots.
